A hotel complex on a sloping site with an 18-meter elevation difference, designed to preserve mature trees. The SPA hotel concept in Smolensk, developed by KPLN Architects, has received a diploma at the international Zodchestvo Festival in the “Social and Cultural Significance” category. The hotel complex was designed for a site on Bakunina Street in the historic center of Smolensk, surrounded by low-rise buildings and located close to the central park and the river embankment. The project demonstrates how architecture can respond to challenging topography and a historic urban context without altering their character. The site, covering more than half a hectare, has a complex yet distinctive landscape, with an elevation difference of up to 18 meters. Rather than leveling the terrain, KPLN Architects made it the foundation of the architectural composition, preserving the mature trees growing on the slope. The complex consists of three separate buildings: a hotel, a SPA center, and apartments. Positioned at different elevations, they follow the natural contours of the slope.
