Design for the passenger terminal of Chelyabinsk International Airport, in the settlement of Balandino, Chelyabinsk Region. An airport of federal importance received a terminal designed by a full-cycle bureau.
Chelyabinsk is the metallurgical capital of the country, so the team at KPLN Architects proposed metal facades with a texture that visually and metaphorically evokes steel fish scale or chain mail. A reference to the city's industrial character ties the building to its history and turns the terminal into a recognizable symbol of the region.
The terminal facade responds flexibly to passenger flows: its complex geometry shifts in accordance with the direction of people's movement. Hinged panels animate the surface — as the facade transforms, they smoothly move from dense overlapping to freely hanging segments. Built-in lighting accentuates the rhythm of the metal plates. These techniques build an expressive image and ensure a logical, functional organization of the interior spaces and the surrounding area.
